It's Raining medals for PIT Gymnasts at Australian National Championships

June 5, 2019

It is a great achievement for our very own Level 7 gymnasts Sarki, Newman and Thomas to have been selected to represent their state at the 2019 Australian Gymnastics Championships. For these three young men it was their very first time competing at Nationals and an experience that they will never forget.

Pressure was on right from the start for the Level 7 opens on day 1 of competition for the Team Event.  Floor was the first apparatus and  all the boys on team Vic showed nerves of steel as they stuck most of their tumbling lines and fought for every single point towards their team. After the first rotation Victoria was on top of the leader board by a substantial margin.  Next apparatus was Pommels.  Due to Pommels usually being a low scoring apparatus it was very important for all of the gymnasts to give it their all and above all else stay on the pommel! Thomas and Sarki, being two of the highest scoring pommel workers on the team, the pressure was on them to step up and perform for their state.

Sarki and Thomas held their nerves and performed two clean and controlled routines scoring the two highest scores for Victoria. Victoria maintained their lead for the next 4 rotations and came away with first place Overall making them the Level 7 Team Australian Champions.  Sarki, Thomas and this amazing team of Level 7 Open gymnasts were a team in the purest form of the word.  From the first state team training session to the last day of competition, these boys supported one another and cheered each other on through the ups and downs.

Day 2 was the Individual Apparatus Event where team mates became each other’s competitors.  The skill level on Parallel Bars was very high at these nationals with many neat and powerful gymnasts executing flawless routines.  With Parallel Bars being one of Sarki’s strongest apparatus he knew he had to hit a flawless routine to be up in the medals and this is what he did.  With a powerful and effortless routine Sarki performed each skill with accuracy and secured himself an Australian Championship Bronze medal.  Sarki also managed to finish in the top 10 in Australia on Pommel Horse.

Throughout the competition season Thomas has proved himself to be a top contender on Pommel Horse.  With a high difficulty routine and the strength and timing to match, Thomas came into this Australian Championships with his sights set on a podium spot.  Thomas didn’t let the pressure of the moment get the better of him and glided through a smooth routine, claiming himself a Silver medal and a great conclusion to his first Australian Championships. Thomas also finished 12th in Australia in the All Around event!

For Newman this was his first year competing in Level 7 under and his first experience being part of a state team. Newman powered through his new skills and routines with courage and grit on both day 1 and 2.  Newman displayed high flying routines on his two best apparatus, Floor and Vault, which counted towards his overall team score.   His team finished 3rd place Overall and Newman placed 5th in Australia on vault.

All of the boys were very happy to have been a part of such a great event and have their sights set on Nationals 2020!

Bec our Level 10 Gymnast was also selected to compete at the Australian National Championships for the Victorian Team.  Day 1 was the Team Event and Bec performed some great routines on Vault and Uneven Bars to help her team win Gold and become the Level 10 Australian National Team.  Day 2 was the Individual Apparatus Event and Bec Floor routine was very powerful and scored her 13.025 and combined with her score from Day 1 placed her in 4th place in Australia at the Championships.

Bec was a  great asset to the Victorian Team and also PIT gymnastics
