PIT Boys Taste Success at the Grips Invitational

A cold morning, no light and not a car on the road; sounds like a day trip to Mt Buller! But it wasn't, instead it was the first competition of the year for the Junior PIT boys at Grips Gymnastics Club. With the coffee in the thermos and the heater on full blast the boys made the trek out to Ringwood for their 7am start.

Session 1 was represented by Adele (Level 1), Finn, Dominic and Luciano (level 2). This was Adele’s first ever competition but he was as cool as a cucumber to collect 1st on Vault and an astounding 1st All Around (AA). Congratulations on your effort and looking forward to seeing you perform alongside the other Level 1’s at the PIT Invite next weekend. The Level 2’s also had a solid hit out with highlights that included Dominic’s very professional and composed Floor routine, Luciano’s magnificent 2nd place on Pommels and Finn claiming 3rd place AA! Great job boys keep working hard on those toes and legs!

Next up in Session 2 were the Level 3 Open and Under’s. It was going to be an interesting session to see how the other clubs were fairing after the new routine changes from the previous year. If you are unaware of the changes, the new routines have been stacked with increased difficulty from the previous years making them quite challenging for the boys.

To make the team event a bit more interesting for the PIT Boys, I decided to mixed up both the Open and Under teams for a bit of PIT vs PIT action. There was now some bragging rights on the line so the boys had to make sure they were extra tight during their routines!

Highlights of their first comp included Jamil producing one of the best and most consistent performances I’ve seen him do to claim 2nd AA with a beautiful Pommels and P-bar routine to claim 1st place. Adam bravely overcame an ankle injury to come in at 3rd AA with a 1st on Rings and remarkably a 1st on Vault! Daniel demonstrated some nice lines and posture in his Pommel claiming 5th AA while James displayed his power on the vault to pick up 8th AA. In the Open division Josh just missed out on a podium AA place coming in at 4th with one of his most consistent competitions I’ve seen him do. His 3rd on Floor and H-bar demonstrated how much he has improved from the previous season. Thomas was looking very composed in a well presented Floor and Vault routine while Lucas showed his class on the H-bar. And Lastly Henry had an impressive Floor routine and displayed a nice straddle shoot out on H-bar. The Team Event turned out to be an incredibly tight contest between both PIT White (Adam, Jamil, Lucas & Henry) and PIT Blue (Daniel, James, Josh & Thomas). Both teams placed on the podium 2nd and 3rd with PIT Blue edging out PIT White by only 0.4!!! Great contest guys!

The last session of the day featured our Level 4 contingent of Will J (4U) Will B and Harley (4O). All Boys competed well at their first competition of the season with Will J picking up 1st on Floor, Pommel, Rings, Vault and 1st AA. Highlights were definitely his high quality Pommel routine displaying the bonus ¼ turn with ease and his solid Rings with a perfect shoulder stand, Good job! Harley battled all competition with his consistency to pick up 2nd AA! An amazing effort displaying a great Pommel and Rings routine claiming 1st on each respectively. He also connected his kip-cast-stalder on H-bar which is a very challenging skill that he’s been working very hard on at training. Will B showed his determination on Rings picking up 2nd place and miraculously turning his Layout Vault around from the most mistimed run-up I’ve ever seen, good fight Will! (Guess what we’re working on in training next week!!!). The Boys also picked up 1st place in the Team Event which was an amazing effort considering there were teams of 6 gymnasts from other clubs but only three scores to count. Good job boys!

Overall a great start to the competition season, the boys did a great job! Back to training to improve those scores!! Big thanks to Grips Gymnastics for hosting the weekend’s event, the team did a great job and it was a nice and relaxed environment. I definitely appreciated the egg and bacon rolls between sessions, they hit the spot!
